About the Artist
Adelbert Johan Winther (1913–1972) was a Danish painter born in Hamburg to Danish parents. He grew up in Denmark and later received artistic training in the Netherlands (1935–1938) under the Dutch painter Adriaan Joh. van ’t Hoff.
Winther worked in several professions during his life, including as a forest worker and ferryman to the Danish island Venø, which later inspired the name he used to sign many of his paintings. From around 1960 he frequently signed his works A.W. Venø.
